How to Coordinate Outfits for Family Photos

July 29, 2024

This momma beautifully coordinated the whole families outfits for this session. In this post I will give you 5 Easy Tips to create the perfect look for your family.

1. Start with One Item of Clothing: In this case let’s start with the mom’s dress. It’s Navy with a variety of colorful flowers (pink, green, blue, & orange). Why I Love this: it’s a subtle pattern at a distance and interesting up close. It fits her well and has a fun ruffle at the bottom, it’s short without being too short, and is nicely styled with a tall suede tan boot. She nailed it!!

2. Finalize Color Palette: Based off her dress, she narrowed down the colors to: tan, pink, mauve, brown & navy blue. It’s good to have 2-4 colors, you don’t want to have too many that are fighting against each other. The tan & brown are in the same color family, as well as the pink and mauve, and the blue in another.

Toddler Boy: Long sleeve navy collared shirt with a nice texture, khaki pants and shoes tennis shoes. Dad: I like how dad is wearing similar colors to his son, but not exact. They are also inverted, instead of matching exactly. Dad is wearing a tan crew neck sweater with jeans and brown boots. Baby Girl: This little cutie is wearing an adorable pink dress, tights, metallic booties and a matching pink bow.

3. Make sure all items are Seasonally Appropriate. Long sleeves, long pants, and boots: signal cold weather which is perfect! Texturing also signal seasons, eh: Velvet & Wool signal Fall/Winter, whereas Linen is appropriate in the summer. I Wouldn’t pair this with flip flops or a tank top.

4. Coordinate Effectively with the Location: It’s best to choose your location first so you can figure out how your outifts will best fit in in with your spot. These colors and textures work well this our rolling hills vibe, this wouldn’t work as well if they were say on a beach in Hawaii.

5. Interesting Textures: Another way to coordinate without looking too “matchy matchy” is using textures. You could use the same color and use different textures to create some variety. We’ve got wool (dad’s sweater) velvet (baby’s dress) some ruching (mom’s dress) and cotton (toddler boy’s sweater.)
